Last week, former Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn confirmed the launch of a new political party to "build a democratic movement that can take on the rich and powerful.” After getting over 500,000 people signing up, we asked the people of Brecon and Radnorshire if they would consider joining the movement?
The party, which will be co-led by ex-Labour MP Zarah Sultana, is temporarily named Your Party, with a conference to be held allowing founding members to shape how Your Party works, what it stands for, and how the party can win. A name will also be decided.
Stephen Gray said: “Been waiting for ages for this. A party not controlled by big business.”
Which is very much the ethos of this party. In a statement, Corbyn and Sultana said “the system is rigged”, continuing with “it’s time for a new kind of political party. One that is rooted in our communities, trade unions and social movements. One that builds power in all regions and nations. One that belongs to you.” The party also supported mass redistribution of wealth and power by taxing the very richest in our society, as well as an NHS free of privatisation. The party would also aim to bring energy, water, rail and mail into public ownership. They will also stand up to fossil fuel giants putting their profits before our planet. The party also promised to campaign for a free and independent Palestine, and demands to end all arms sales to Israel.
Adam Tatton-Reid said: “I've signed up. If you care about others then Reform are not the answer. They want the strip away 'woke DEI and diversity'. Easy to forget that those groups include disabled, elderly and assisted needs.”
Bill Flemming said: “Yes, of course. When the current Labour government is just a more effective Tory government than the Conservatives can supply.”
Ifan Richards quoted Orwell, saying: “When the government starts picking on the disabled and weakest in our society it's time for a change. "All animals are equal but some more equal than others.””
Joanna Lambert said: “Already signed up. Party that stands against poverty while we have more millionaires than ever sounds good to me.”
However, some are concerned that this party further splits the vote, making a clearer path for Reform UK to gain seats, with Carl Gwynne proudly stating: “Reform all the way for me.”
Richard Morgans said: “All it will do is open the door to a Reform government with Farage as PM. In much the same way Brexiteer Corbyn helped Farage open the door to Britain leaving the EU. I foresee another disaster.”
Stephen Buzza said: “I believe it won't split the vote and certainly not in favour of Reform. Tories might get a few more votes but as only 59% of the electorate voted in the last GE, that 41% of voting potentially could swing the vote. A party worth voting for.”
There is concern that a Corbyn led party will take votes away from the Green Party.
Corbyn’s last bid for power had its own controversy, and in the 2019 election Labour suffered its worst result since 1935, something Wendy Morrison hasn’t forgot. “Not with him leading it, all he cares about is getting back in the limelight.” However, it should be noted that Corbyn’s bid for the top job had more voting share than Starmer’s recent victory.
Ian Broom doesn’t see the point in any party, saying “What is the point of a political party? They promise you the world but never comes to fruition.”
Berni Benton said: “Signed up and even prepared to stand.”
With over 500,000 people signing up for more information, this is a party that could shake up politics. Time will tell.
