A CONCERT is being held in Brecon to celebrate the birthdays of a renowned violinist and her father.

Rachel Podger and her father Richard will be celebrating their birthdays, which are only 10 days apart, with a concert of Bach’s cantatas at Brecon Cathedral. The concert on Sunday, May 13, will include a baroque orchestra which will be led by Rachel, who will be turning 50 on May 30. Accompaniment will be provided by a four-part choir directed by Richard and featuring his son Julian, who is a tenor soloist. The other members of the choir are soprano Elizabeth Priday, mezzo soprano Louise Woods and bass William Stevens.

Richard, who turns 80 on May 20, said: “We thought we would celebrate in a way our family knows well, with music – specifically Bach. My daughter Rachael will be playing, and my son Julian has composed a couple of little pieces for us to perform.”

Rachel’s partner Tim Cronin and their daughter Carys will also perform at the concert on viola, along with Rachel’s other daughter, Rebecca, who is a soprano. The concert, which will have refreshments in the interval, will start at 8pm. Tickets, which cost £10 or are free for people under 18, are available by calling 01874 622160 or on the door.
