The sound of high-powered racing bikes will once again echo across the hills above Rhayader this month as the Welsh Open Motocross Championship returns for its 21st running.

The event takes place on the evening of Wednesday, May 27, at the Cwmythig Hill circuit in St Harmon and is sponsored by Caerfagu Prouducts Ltd, Bodenham Enterprise Park, and Steve Rowlands & Sons.

Among those set to compete is last year’s winner Conrad Mewse, alongside top UK GP rider Ben Watson and leading Welsh competitor Adam Sterry. They will be joined by Taylor Hammal, Bobby Bruce and Henry Williams in what is expected to be a tightly contested evening of racing.

The hillside track, which underwent a significant revamp last season, now features a series of major jumps including the American-style jump along the start straight, a downhill ski jump, a “wall of death” berm, a 65ft finish line tabletop jump and a 125ft uphill triple jump.

Racing gets underway with practice at 5:30pm, followed by the first of 10 scheduled races at 6:30pm. The programme includes Pro/Experts, Clubman/Veterans and Novice/Ladies categories, before a final “dash for cash” race for leading Pro/Expert riders.

Last year’s event attracted around 4,000 spectators, and organisers say they are expecting another strong turnout, with full trackside commentary from Chris Czora and Leah Yarranton, trade stands, catering and licensed bar facilities available throughout the evening.

The circuit is laid out so that almost the entire track can be seen from any single vantage point.

New for 2026 is a dedicated hardstanding car park for senior citizens and disabled spectators, offering improved viewing access.

Admission is £10 for adults, £5 for children under 15, with under-fives admitted free. Tickets will be available on the gate, cash only.
