BETTY MORRIS is so dedicated to knitting woollen items to help orphans survive the harsh winters in Eastern Europe she didn’t even put down her knitting needles on her 91st birthday.
In the last year she has been supporting Dolau Womens Institute by making hundreds of squares for blankets as well as sets of hats, scarves and mittens for an orphanage in Romania. To mark her birthday, Dolau WI member Iris Anderson made her a cake and president Jan Lumley presented her with a card and plant in thanks for all her hard work.
Among Betty’s many cards and presents from WI members were gifts of wool which she is currently using to make more squares and hats.
Betty, who celebrated her birthday last week, was born at Cwmsaice, Llandewi. After leaving school she helped on Caergynant Farm where they made all their own bread, butter and cheese. Later she worked for two shillings a day at Cefncanfoedl.
She married and had a son, Leslie, and they worked at Coedglasson for Captain Carlisle, going on to Waindu where her husband was farm bailiff for 23 years for Lord Ormathwaite.
A move followed to Penybont where Betty worked at the Severn Arms for 32 years. Now retired to Crossgates, Betty still goes to dominoes and bingo.
