A WORLD War II veteran who is thought to be the last surviving member of his bomber crew has relived his memories of the conflict.

John Ellis, who lives near Glasbury-on-Wye, saw two years active service, from 1943, which included regular bombing raids over Nazi occupied Europe and preparing the way for the D-Day landings.

The 92-year-old had joined the RAF at 19 hoping to become a pilot but was instead told he would serve as the flight engineer and was posted to the Royal Australian Air Force.

"I do indeed feel lucky," said John who has recalled the horrors of the conflict in which he saw planes "shot down in flames".

During the war John also meet the teenage Princess Elizabeth after crash landing in Norfolk.
