THIS evening’s inaugural Brecon & Radnor Express Sports Awards due to take place at the Wellington Hotel in Brecon have been cancelled because of the adverse weather.
Luke Walding, the general manager of the newspaper, said that "regrettably" the awards would have to be postponed because of weather warnings being issued by the Met Office and police, which suggested it would be too risky today for many people to venture out in their cars.
"We were going to have people coming to the awards from all over Powys, so for many of them it could have been a risky journey with all the snow that’s forecast.
"We don’t know yet when the awards will be held now but it should be quite soon. We will put stories in the paper and on our website and Facebook page letting people know when that is."
The awards were due to be held at the Wellington Hotel in The Bulwark in Brecon which has recently been refurbished.
Many of the sports stars nominated for the awards as well as their friends and families had been due to attend.
The awards are divided into seven categories with nominations being made by the B&R’s readers before Christmas and the vote for the winners taking place early in the new year.
The seven categories are: Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sports Team of the Year, Young Sports Star, Veteran Sports Star, Disabled Sports Star and Sports Volunteer of the Year.
Paralympics gold medal winner Rob Davies had been due to give a short speech at the awards and will still hopefully be able to attend the rescheduled event, which will also be held at the Wellington Hotel.
Rob, who became paralysed after he suffered a broken neck when a scrum collapsed during a rugby match while he was playing for Brecon, had planned to talk about how he battled back from adversity to lift a gold medal in the Paralympics table tennis at Rio in 2016.
The event was going to be compered by Mark Weller from Ocsid Entertainment. He has intimated he will be able to compere the rescheduled event later this month.
Guests due to attend the evening would have been able to enter a a raffle, with prizes being sponsored by 21A, A1 Electrics, Costa Coffee, George Hotel, Vision Express, Brecon Brewery Tap, Premier Stores in Brecon, Shipshape Hairdressers, the Castle of Brecon Hotel, Cardiff Devils and Dragonfly Cruises.
The raffle will still go ahead at the rescheduled awards evening with proceeds going to the Wales Air Ambulance Charity.
