McCartney’s Brecon saw a strong trade on Tuesday, December 16, with an entry of 1,045 finished lambs alongside 223 cull ewes and rams.
Overall demand remained strong, leaving a Standard Quality Quotation (SQQ) of 326.7ppkg and an overall average of 322.5ppkg.
All types of prime lambs were significantly dearer than in previous weeks. The best export-quality lambs made between 328ppk and 345ppkg, up around 25p on the week. Lighter lambs also sold well, with crossbred types achieving 320-340ppkg, while hill lambs reached 310-325ppkg. Heavier lambs generally traded at 285-305ppkg.
Auctioneers noted that numbers will need to increase weekly to meet growing demand over the festive period.
The 223 ewes and cull rams on offer also saw a strong trade, in line with recent weeks. Top-quality ewes sold for £150 and above, with the best hill ewes reaching £142 and an overall average of £128. Only very plain types fetched £80 or less. Market organisers stressed that more ewes are needed weekly to satisfy the six active buyers currently operating in the ring.
McCartney’s thanked all vendors for their continued support, particularly for the busy Tuesday sales.
