The family behind a Brecon shop have described their excitement at featuring on the hit BBC TV show Antique Road Trip.

Brecon Vintage and Vinyl, based on the Bulwark, will feature on the show this week which sees antique experts compete to find the best treasures and make the most money at auction.

The shop, which has been run by Jonathan and Vanessa Usher along with their son Jay for the last four years, was visited by antique expert Raj Bisram in November in preparation for the episode.

“They filmed it about two months ago. They only phoned up about three days before and asked would we do it, so although they obviously give us much notice we still said yes,” said Jonathan.

Only one person from the family team was required for filming - Jonathan said it was Jay who appeared on camera with Raj, however the family all met the antiques star.

Despite online rumours that the show is fixed, Jonathan also confirmed that the show is legitimate with the visit being exactly like how it is seen on the TV.

He said: “It was interesting to see how they filmed it. It’s all, it is as it appears so to speak, it’s not fixed as some people suggested it might have been.

“It was good to know it was all kind of genuine and that there’s no unfairness behind it - it’s all genuine

Jonathan said the family was “very excited” when they received the phone call last year asking if they would be interested in appearing on the show.

He said: “We were very, very excited and pleased to be doing it - it gives us lots of publicity and air time.

“They were here for quite a while as they were filming but we were all very pleased. We’ve always dreamed that this would happen, we’ve been doing this for four years and always hoped we’d be selected for a programme like this.

“We’re all excited about seeing it on the television, we don’t know what it will come across like.”

The items which Raj purchased from the store included an African birthing chair as well as a large club-like-item which is around five-feet long and thought to be used to smash grains to make flour.

Jonathan said: “Sometimes, they come in and they only pay a tenner on the TV but it was considerably more than that. The things we sold him were interesting and it’ll be good to see whether he’ll make a profit or a loss - we don’t know the outcome yet, but we’re all looking forward to seeing how he did.“

“We got to meet Raj and to have photos with him. He came in about ten minutes before the film crew just to have a chat with us.

“He was really nice - he looked around and told us some stories about stuff he’d bought privately and that sort of thing which was really good.

“The film crew all came in and he left. He shook our hands - we were glad to meet him and we’ll be routing for him to win.”

Tune into BBC One at 4.30pm on Wednesday, February 2 to see Brecon Vintage and Vinyl with Raj on the show.
