A BRECON town councillor has been banned from driving after she admitted to being almost three times over the legal drink drive limit.

Councillor Catherine Mary Elizabeth Griffiths, who is a town councillor for the St John's ward west, appeared before Brecon magistrates court on Friday, January 2 and admitted the offence.

The court heard how the 45-year-old was stopped at 1.50am on November 28, 2014 after PC Kevin Harran witnessed the defendants vehicle being driven in a erratic manner.

Prosecutor Steve Davies said: "PC Harran illuminated the blue lights of his vehicle and the Renault Megane, being driven by the defendant, continued to travel a further 300 metres and took three attempts to safely get through the driveway.

"When the officer spoke with the driver he noticed her speech was slurred and she couldn't walk in a straight line. She said she had only had two glasses of wine. Following her arrest she was taken to Brecon police station where she gave a positive reading being 95 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit being 35 micrograms."

Owain Jones defending said that his client was very distressed and fearful of the magistrates powers: "My client is aware she faces disqualification but on the night of the incident she was fleeing violence. No one was hurt and as she had been a victim of violence in the past her judgement was not the best."

Griffiths received a community order for 12 months with a supervision requirement and was banned from driving for 24 months. She was ordered to pay a £20 fine, £85 prosecution costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
