This year marks a special milestone for the Brecon Floral Society, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

Founded in 1950 by Major and Mrs Murray of Penpont, the group began life as the “Brecon Flower Show,” with the inaugural committee meeting held on December 11 1950. At that meeting, the organisers agreed to “lend” £2 to fund the first Spring Show the following year.

In its early days, the Society focused primarily on growing plants and cut flowers, with the winner of the first show receiving a prize of 2 shillings and 6 pence.

In 1955, the organisation adopted a membership model and renamed itself the “Brecon Floral Society.” Five years later, in 1960, it joined the Three Counties & South Wales Area of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS). Over the decades, the Society has flourished, and by 2010 it celebrated its Emerald Anniversary with a membership nearing 90.

To mark this landmark 70th year, a celebratory luncheon was held on Thursday, June 26 at Peterstone Court, attended by 44 members. The event was attended by Club President, Ann Bevan, as well as three honorary members: Dorothy Burns, Vera Davies, and Margaret Eckley.

Also attending was Mrs Delyth Price, Area Chairman of the Three Counties & South Wales NAFAS.

A photograph taken at the event features Committee members Lynda Probert, Lynda Payant, Judy Powell, Ann Kinsey, Diane Protheroe, Anona Lewis, and Jane Davies, alongside the guests.
