Brecon Mountain Rescue Team have been back amongst the callouts recently with some walkers in need of their help.

On Wednesday, 5 November, the team were called out to Pen Milan to assist a male walker who had slipped on rough, wet ground and sustained a lower leg injury.

The team located the casualty, assessed and treated them, before taking them off the hill on a stretcher to the team’s ATV. The individual was then passed over to the Welsh Ambulance Services Trust at Cwm Llwch before being taken to hospital.

A few days later on Saturday, 8 November, the team were called out to the Pen-y-Fan area to assist a group of walkers.

They had attempted to walk from Pont ar Daf via Pen-y-Fan to Cribyn, however when they reached Jacob’s Ladder, one of the party began to feel unwell.

Passers by helped and called 999 and the rescue team was deployed.

Once on scene, the casualty was assessed before being evacuated by stretcher and then by Gator, along with the rest of the group.

A spokesperson for Brecon Mountain Rescue Team said: “We wish all our casualties a speedy recovery.”

They then added some safety advice for this time of year: “With this recent period of poor weather, please plan thoroughly when you are going out walking- colder weather, rain, and darkness can all cause issues when you are out adventuring, so being prepared for poor conditions is so important when it comes to staying safe in the mountains.

“Have a think before you go- do you know your route? If you had a mishap or got lost, would you be warm and dry enough and have enough food if you needed to call out Mountain Rescue (who may take a few hours to reach you)? Do you have sufficient lighting if you’re walking in the dark?

“Make your plans before you go: Do I have the KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS for the day? Do I know what the WEATHER will be like? (It can be up to ten degrees colder the higher to a summit you go) Do I have the right GEAR?”
