A SUPER school proposed for Brecon is unlikely to open in 2017 as originally proposed, it has been revealed.

The Brecon Learning Campus, which will replace the existing Brecon High School and nearby further education college buildings, is proposed to be built on the site of the adjacent Brecon Leisure Centre. A new leisure centre and swimming pool are also planned.

Brecon Town Council was briefed on the £75 million plan, which Powys County Council hopes will be 50 per cent funded by the Welsh Government, by project manager Jim Swabey.

He said officials are now reworking the proposals, following a public consultation before Christmas and it is intended to resubmit them to the Welsh Government in the summer.

"It is proposed the strategic outline case is completed in June this year. September 2018 is the opening date."

The county council had previously said it hoped construction work could start in April 2015 and the new facilities opened by September 2017.
