BRECON town council is to take ownership of public toilets in the centre of town and at the Promenade.

The toilets at Lion Yard and those near the Boathouse at the Promenade are being transferred to the town council by Powys County Council.

The unitary authority has sought to off load public toilets to local councils or voluntary groups and warned it will close those toilets other organisations are unwilling to take on.

Brecon Town Council is due to reach an agreement with Wiltshire based contractor Healthmatic Limited for the maintenance of the toilets.

The contract is valued at £12,000 a year while the town council must also meet the cost of utility bills and non domestic rates at the facilities.

The Promenade toilets are only open during the spring and summer and have already closed for the winter.

The Lion Yard toilets remain open.
