On Saturday, May 4, Chloe, aged 10, from Brecon took part in the Cancer Research UK Race for Life, Muddy 5K in Cardiff.

Chloe’s heart-warming incentive was to raise money to try and make her mum better.

She has raised more than £600 for the charity to date.

This year was Chloe’s second time competing in the race. She tackled obstacles and pools of mud with her second cousin, Mike, and finished with an impressive time of around 27 minutes - in the top 10 of the children taking part.

Chloe’s mum, Sarah Smart spoke about where her fundraising ideas stemmed from: “Back in October 2022 I had a lung biopsy, and it was a cancer scare but thankfully it wasn’t cancer. It turned out to be lung disease. Fast forward a little bit and Chloe asked what a certificate was on the wall at my mum’s house and I explained that people do things for charity and it helps raise money for finding cures and treatments - and she asked if she could do it.

“Chloe then signed up to do the Muddy Run 5K in Cardiff last year and raised £300, and decided she was going to do it again this year. She’s such a unique, kind, caring little girl; she’d give you her last fiver type of thing!

“All of this is off her own back, she wanted to do it and to get that sponsorship this year - I cried because I was so proud. I think we put down a target of £200 because of the cost-of-living crisis and everyone’s struggling but Chloe’s smashed it out the park. I think she’s just got this cute little face that no one can say no to.”

Chloe is hoping to take part in next year’s run for a third time. When she isn’t fundraising, Chloe enjoys gymnastics, football, acting and even runs her own business called Bracelets by Chloe on Vinted.

Chloe will appear in Brecon Little Theatre’s upcoming production of ‘Oliver!’ and dreams of becoming a famous actress.
