The Royal Welsh Museum will close a day early for its winter break after burst pipes caused damage to the collection.

In a social media post today (Monday), the Trustees of the world-famous museum said that most of the artefacts were recovered thanks to the efforts of the curator and volunteers, but significant damage was still caused.

The pipes burst over the weekend, caused by the recent cold weather, which has seen temperatures struggle to reach over freezing for the best part of a week.

In their statement, the Trustees of the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh said: “Regrettably, the recent cold snap has had a severe impact on the Royal Welsh Museum.

“During the weekend of December 17/18, pipes burst causing significant damage.

“Due to the incredible efforts of the curator and museum volunteers, most of the priceless regimental artefacts were recovered, but significant damage was caused.

“As a direct rest of this, the museum will close a day early for its winter break.”

The Trustees also confirmed that a a further update would be given once a full assessment had been carried out, before thanking people for their ongoing support.

The museum's collection is made up of artefacts collected from a variety of sources from around the world and which display the regiments’ 300-year history.

The collection boasts over 33,000 objects which aid in telling the many stories of the regiments, including a First and Second World War collection and Victoria Crosses awarded during the Anglo-Zulu war.
