On Friday, 9 September, Cai Powell and his three friends from Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan set up a cake sale in aid of the Nepal flash floods that happened in late August.
Upon hearing the news on the radio, Cai knew that his friend Samrat and his family were from Nepal and wanted to do something to help so within the first week of the new school term, Cai organised a cake sale to take place at the end of the week.
Cai was helped by his fellow year 5 friends Iwan, Samrat, and Adam and with donated cakes baked by staff and parents, the cake sale made a total of £447.91. When asked, Cai said: “I knew Samrat and his family were from there and I wanted to help. I knew we would raise a lot of money!”
The PTA group, Friends of Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan, rounded the total to £450 and made the donation to the Red Cross.
Red Cross donations are helping those affected access essential support to help rebuild from this disaster in Nepal and other crises around the world.
Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan Headteacher Mrs Sarah Court said: “The four pupils who organised this fundraiser have done an outstanding job raising money for those affected by the disaster in Nepal; this was a cause close to our hearts. We are incredibly proud of their leadership, compassion and the generosity shown by the whole school community.”
The cake sale took place on Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan’s Mount Street Junior Campus. The school was formed in 2024 with the merger of three campuses: Cradoc, Mount Street Juniors and Mount Street Infants.
