A SOLICITOR who has for more than 20 years sought to clear the name of an armed robber from Llandrindod Wells has addressed MPs.

Glyn Maddocks, of Crickhowell, is continuing to fight to overturn the 1970 conviction of Tony Stock, even though the Llandrindod resident died in November 2012.

Since the solicitor became involved in the case, in 1993, he admits his mind has been opened to the possibility of the criminal justice system getting things badly wrong: "Probably, like most people, I hadn't given much thought to the possibility that innocent people could be wrongly convicted. But suddenly it strikes you, there is an individual case and you see the system is not working in the way it should.

"Until then I probably thought it did work reasonably well."

This week Glyn, of Crickhowell firm Gabb and Co, gave evidence to MPs on the House of Commons justice select committee which is looking at the work of the body which examines alleged miscarriages of justice, the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).

Glyn was due to tell the MPs of his experiences of the body and in working on miscarriages of justice cases.

He is hopeful Tony Stock's case will be referred to the Court of Appeal for a fifth time.

It has become a notorious case among justice campaigners, convinced the conviction is unsafe, and Glyn has helped journalist Jon Robins write a book 'The First Miscarriage of Justice: The 'Unreported and Amazing' Case of Tony Stock'.

"It was an obsession with justification for Tony," said Glyn who has also recently been asked to look into the case of a man hanged in 1953.

"Families are determined to clear their names, people do not give up and you can't blame them.

"It is about recognising something went wrong and trying to put it right," added Glyn who has with other solicitors and barristers set up a charity, the Centre for Criminal Appeals (CCA) that aims to take on the cases of those who claim they've been wrongly convicted and work to overturn them.
