The Chairman of Powys County Council has written to Her Majesty the Queen expressing the county’s great sadness following the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

Councillor Gwynfor Thomas has expressed deepest sympathies on behalf of members, staff and residents following today’s announcement from Buckingham Palace.

Flags have been lowered to half-mast at County Hall, in Llandrindod Wells, Neuadd Maldwyn, Welshpool, Ladywell House, Newtown and Neuadd Brycheiniog, Brecon as a mark of respect. Kirsty Williams, William Powell and Brecon & Radnorshire Liberal Democrats have also paid tribute pay to Prince Philip. Commenting, Kirsty Williams said: “I am so very sorry to learn of the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. He led a long life dedicated to service. “His commitment to supporting vocational and outdoors education and opportunities for young people through The Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme and other projects was immense and had a transformative impact on so many lives. “My deepest sympathy to Her Majesty The Queen, the Royal Family, and all those who feel this loss most keenly today.” William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd candidate for Brecon & Radnorshire, added: “I express my sincere condolences to Her Majesty The Queen on the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He has been a steadfast servant of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Commonwealth of Nations for over 70 years. “Prior to his marriage to The Queen, he was also a distinguished and heroic officer of the Royal Navy. “Our country has lost a towering figure of the 20th and 21st Centuries.”
