FEARS have been raised over the future of organised sports in a Breconshire town that has enjoyed unprecedented on field success.

Ystradgynlais has seen its rugby team clinch its league title this season - a feat matched by the town's football side.

But the clubs as well as the town's cricket club, which also won its league last summer, are having to face up to Powys County Council budget cuts, with the authority passing responsibility for maintenance of the town's recreation ground to community groups.

The council took the decision to transfer responsibility for recreation grounds across Powys as part of its 2014/15 budget which aims to save £20 million this year.

Huw Thomas, Ystradgynlais RFC press officer, said: "I don't want sport in Ystradgynlais to die just because of a few extra charges."
