A CHARITY walker’s promotional banner was blown away after he unfurled it at the top of Pen y Fan.
Des Lally from Brecon is getting close to his target of climbing Pen y Fan 365 times in 365 days and should finish the challenge next month.
He is doing the challenge for Help for Heroes and Cancer Research and has already raised more than £20,000.
Last week he was approached by Help for Heroes Community Recovery Team in Treforest and asked to take a banner to the top of the mountain as part of their #CutTheClock campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of time it takes veterans to seek help for mental health issues.
Every time Des reaches the summit in his epic charity challenge, he takes a photo or records a video message to mark the climb.
On Friday (February 8), after his 302nd ascent, he recorded a message encouraging veterans to come forward for mental health support if they need it, and to share the image of the Stigma Clock, which has been projected onto Cardiff Castle and landmarks across the UK.
Unfortunately, the winds at the top of south Wales’ highest peak were so strong they blew the banner away, in the direction of Brecon.
Only two of the banners have been made, and Des, along with Help for Heroes, is very keen to get it back, as it’s due to be used in more awareness-raising activities.
A disconsolate Des said: “I was honoured to be asked to support this vitally important campaign and I am truly devastated to have lost the banner. If anyone spots it, please get in touch because I’d love to get it back to Help for Heroes so they can share the message of the very important work they do to support people affected by their military service.”
Shelley Elgin, community recovery manager for Help for Heroes in Wales, said: “Des has made a monumental effort to support Help for Heroes and Cancer Research in his efforts over the last year. We’re so grateful that he was willing to take our banner to the top of Pen y Fan as part of his challenge.”
If anyone sees the banner they are asked to contact Help for Heroes or Des to return it.
