Christ College Brecon is celebrating outstanding feedback following its latest inspection by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW), which found no areas for improvement and praised the school’s “warm, supportive” boarding community.

Inspectors reported that pupils experience a “family-like” environment where they feel safe, valued and listened to, with a strong sense of belonging at the heart of boarding life. Relationships between staff and pupils were described as “warm, respectful and responsive,” with children confident that support is always available.

Care and pastoral provision were identified as major strengths, supported by a highly effective system spanning house staff, the Welfare Centre and a school counsellor. The report highlights a “proactive, relational model of care” enabling pupils to thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

Pupil voice is a key strength, with boarders actively shaping their experience through forums and house councils. Inspectors noted that pupils see real changes as a result of their feedback, from menus to activities and daily routines.

The inspection also praised the breadth of opportunities available, including sport, the arts, outdoor pursuits and volunteering, helping pupils build confidence, independence and a strong sense of social responsibility. Boarding life provides a balanced structure that supports both personal development and academic success.

The environment was described as safe, comfortable and homely, with a “home-from-home ethos” that fosters belonging and community. Leadership and management were found to be strong, effective and child-centred, with robust safeguarding systems and a clear focus on wellbeing.

This success follows a recent inspection by Estyn, which praised the school’s “culture of respect, support and ambition” and strong leadership.

Headteacher Gareth Pearson said: “We are delighted that this report recognises what makes Christ College so special—our strong sense of community, the quality of care we provide, and the relationships that underpin everything we do. Boarding here is truly a home-from-home experience, and I am incredibly proud of our staff and pupils.”

Nestled in the peaceful surroundings of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Christ College Brecon provides a holistic education for boys and girls, with day pupils joining from age 4 and boarding pupils aged 10–18.

Founded in 1541 by Henry VIII, the school has been a community of learning for nearly 500 years. Its motto, “They achieve because they believe they can,” reflects a commitment to building confidence and a love of learning. With exceptional pastoral care and a compassionate community, pupils thrive in an environment where kindness, respect and personal growth are central to everyday life.
