A VULNERABLE and confused man was found walking at the summit of Pen y Fan - the highest peak in southern Britain.
The man was assisted down from the mountain by a member of the public and was checked over by paramedics and assisted by members of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team at lunchtime today.
Deputy team leader Mark Jones said the rescue service had been called after the member of the public contacted police concerned for the 66-year-old man’s safety.
Mr Jones said: "He was vulnerable and wasn’t really able to look after himself and wasn’t really prepared to go up there. He just had a ripped t-shirt on and a member of the public called police to say he looked confused.
"He walked the man down and we give him a chocolate and sugary drink as he had low sugar levels."
Mr Jones said it’s thought the man had travelled to the mountain by public transport.
After being checked over by the ambulance crew at the Pont ar Daf car park, at the foot of the mountain, he was taken back to Brecon by the police who put him in a taxi to take him home to South Wales.
Mr Jones praised the member of the public who he only knew as Jason.
He said: "The member of the public Jason kept an eye on him and got his confidence.
"I would ask people to be aware of those around them and look out for their fellow walkers.
"Jason was concerned as this man looked confused and there are some big drops up there which can be a risk and which people need to be aware of."
