Fairwater 2 Brecon Corries 2

BRECON Corries are offering fans free entry to their crucial last game decider at the Rich Field this Saturday, May 7.

The Corries threw away a two goal lead against Fairwater last Saturday, meaning their promotion chances now go down to a nail biting final day of the season clash against Penrhiwfer this weekend.

Player manager Damien Daniels admitted his side 'hit the self-destruct button' after Brian Keddle and Gwyn Jones had put them 2-0 up last Saturday, April 30.

In a dramatic game, it was the hosts who could and perhaps should have opened the scoring after making the brighter start, but an early penalty save from 'keeper Stephen Price seemed to sting the Rich Field side into action and after Keddle robbed a defender, he calmly slotted over James Lambert for an interval lead.

A goalmouth scramble then saw Jones smash his side 2-0 in front in the second period and it seemed as if the promotion party could get started.

The 11th placed hosts had other ideas however and the Corries contrived to let their two goal cushion disappear and after the weekend's results they were out off the promotion places.

It could even have been worse for the visitors as the hosts had a late winner ruled out for offside.

"We hit the self-destruct button," admitted Daniels.

"After a slow start in which we could have gone behind, 'Becksy' kept us in it and that save seemed to give us confidence.

"We got a goal and I think the boys thought that with the second goal we could start to relax but credit to Fairwater they came back and to be honest I thought their disallowed goal should have stood, so we were lucky."

Daniels' side are still a good bet for rebounding straight back to Division 1 after last season's relegation.

The Corries lie in fourth, on 61 points, one point behind both Penrhiwceiber Cons and Ynyshir Albion in third and second while Lisvane/Llanishen have been confirmed as champions.

Second placed Albion, however, have played all 30 games and a win this weekend in their last game of the season at the Rich Field against Penrhiwfer would see the Corries go up.

Even a draw is likely to be enough with the Corries' goal difference far superior to the duo directly above them, but after last weekend, Daniels is guarding against complacency.

"We saw what can happen when we're not concentrating fully so we'll have to be focussed on Saturday," he said.

Entry to the game will be free of charge, with Daniels adding: "The fans have been great all season, they've supported us well every game and still kept coming even after the disappointment of last season so this gesture is for them, the boys have really enjoyed playing in front of decent crowds at home this season so this is our way of saying thanks."

Kick-off against 12th placed Penrhiwfer is at 2pm.
