A Presteigne farm has organised a dementia-friendly walk around Llandrindod Lake to support members of the community affected by the disease.

Pentre Farm has organised the walk, which will see members of the community walk around the lake with ponies from the farm before moving inside for a hot drink on Monday, December 5.

The walk is aimed to help people with dementia due to the strong memories that animals sometimes evoke for people with the illness.

Sam McLeod, the owner of the farm, said: “We normally do a pop-up shop with the animals for people, but what we’ve found is that they are very calm and sedate, people with dementia like activity so it’s a great way of offering that.

“The animal side of it is really memory provoking so a lot of people living with people aren’t able to care for animals due to their dementia so living in a rural community every person has a story to tell us about animals.

“A lady was telling us about their 43 wins as a jockey in their teens that even the staff at her care home didn’t know about, so we are almost unlocking memories.”

Funding for the event has been provided by the National Lottery, which Sam was keen to praise.

She did also suggest that this may not be the last event of this kind to run.

“We will definitely do it again if it’s successful, Maybe do a summer one. This one is completely funded by the national lottery community, so it’s great to be able to do it,” said Sam.
