THE children of Ysgol y Bannau were very excited ahead of their annual summer fayre and the recent run of hot weather only added to this excitement.

But when the fayre rolled around last Thursday (July 12) the heavens opened and the afternoon saw nothing but heavy rain.

A new plan was quickly made as stalls were moved inside, and S4C children’s star Martyn Geraint kept everyone’s spirits up with some fun games and activities.

Freya Duggan said of the musician, actor and presenter: “Martyn was absolutely brilliant”, before adding “I think some of the parents enjoyed it more than the children to be honest!”

Spirits remained high through the day, perhaps maintained by the popular “strawberries and cream” stall, and Ms Duggan said: “The rain did not manage to dampen the atmosphere. We still had a wonderful day.”

Besides Martyn’s efforts, the children and visitors were able to enjoy everything from a bouncy castle, tea and cakes and a raffle to a lucky dip, yard games and football skills.

Meanwhile a stall run by NFU Cymru clevery embraced the weather by giving the children a lesson in the importance of rain water in growing crops.
