Llandovery Community Cinema is delighted to welcome audiences back to the Rhys Prichard Memorial Hall for the spring season with a special evening of film on Saturday, 21 March.

To mark International Women’s month the community is celebrating storytelling through the eyes of women and girls.

By showcasing two films written and directed by women and told through the genre of fairy-tale, the cinema group say they can explore strikingly different but deeply connected perspectives on femininity, power and how society shapes women’s lives.

The evening opens with the short film Baich / Burden, a Welsh-language film by director Mared Swain, shown with English subtitles. The film, about motherhood, follows Kath, a struggling mother of two, who walks out of her front door leaving her screaming children behind. Needing 5 minutes of peace, she soon finds herself lost, unable to find her way home. Powerless. Unable to solve the riddle.

The main feature of the night is I Am Not A Witch, the acclaimed debut feature film by Welsh-Zambian director Rungano Nyoni. Blending dark humour with fairy-tale surrealism, the film follows a young girl who is accused of witchcraft and sent to a government-run witch camp. Through this striking premise, Nyoni delivers a powerful exploration of femininity, superstition and authority, asking difficult questions about freedom, control and the moment when a girl begins to be viewed (and treated) as a woman. The film has received international critical acclaim for its originality, visual style and fearless social commentary.

Following the screening, audiences are invited to stay for a post-show discussion with Dr Julie Ann Rees (local author and PHD researcher in Fairy Tale Mythology) offering space to reflect on the films’ themes and share thoughts from a folklore literary perspective in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

Doors open at 5.30pm, with a shared meal beginning at 6pm. Show time is at 7pm with tickets priced at £5. They can be bought at the LYCC, on the door or online: https://bit.ly/llandoverycinemaiamnotawitch
