A fundraising evening in Llangorse has raised more than £2,000 to support refugee families in South Wales.
The event, organised by Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTSR), took place on Saturday, February 28 at Llangorse Community Hall. It brought together local residents and supporters from across the area for an evening of food and friendship.
Guests were welcomed by organisers Becky and Rob before enjoying a Middle Eastern feast prepared by volunteers in their own homes. The menu included tagines, shish kebabs, falafel, biryani, fresh salads, dips, breads, and desserts such as baklava, almond and orange cake, and caramelised oranges. Leftover dishes were taken home by attendees, ensuring nothing went to waste.
Alongside the meal, guests took part in a quiz and had the chance to learn more about the work HBTSR carries out to help refugee families integrate and settle into the community.
A silent auction featured a framed screen print donated by local artist Phil Clarke and a collection of Black Mountains Pottery made by Pauline Paterson and donated by Barbara and Colin Whitticase. Combined with a raffle and donations, the event raised more than £2,000.
Ailsa Dunn, spokesperson for HBTSR, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, volunteered, cooked and contributed to making the evening such a success. The generosity shown by our community enables us to continue offering practical support and a warm welcome to those rebuilding their lives. This generosity stands in stark contrast to the mean and unkind policies of some political parties."
Special thanks were extended to volunteers including Penny, Rachel, Becky F, Aideen, Tina, Alison, Margaret, Melrose, Ailsa, Gail, Sriyani, Kumari, Becky M, Ord, Lawrence, Chris, Paul, Alex, Kathy, Mary, Adil, Robert, Henry and Bethany.
