A play from the award-winning writer of ‘Grav’ and ‘The Wood’, will be performed at Theatr Brycheiniog this Wednesday, May 25.

Starring Gareth John Bale and Gwenllian Higginson, WEST explores the lives of two Welsh people who fall in love and decide to leave Wales to seek a new life in the new world.

Written by Owen Thomas in a lyrical, poetic style and presented using minimal set and physicalized style, WEST primarily focuses on the theme of immigration along with the detailed hardships and adventures the couple face.

It is directed by Gareth John Bale, the successful Welsh actor and director whose credits include ‘Grav’ and ‘Nye and Jennie’ and introduces Gwenllian Higginson, best known to Welsh theatre audiences for ‘Miss Julie’, ‘Exodus’ and ‘Merched Caerdydd’.

Over the last decade Bale and Thomas have collaborated on a range of award-winning Welsh plays including ‘Grav’ and ‘Richard Parker’. They are currently developing ‘The Night Porter’, for RCT Theatres, a ghost story which will be touring Wales in the near future.

The duo are excited to bring their latest collaboration to theatre audiences all around Wales and beyond and thank them for their ongoing support.

Speaking about his journey so far, writer Owen said: “In June 2012 my playwriting career changed overnight when my debut play, ‘Richard Parker’, won Best International Show at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in Los Angeles.

“It led to a range of very exciting projects such as ‘Grav’, a one man show about the life of Ray Gravell, recently made into a film by S4C”.

A decade later, WEST is about to return to Los Angeles, after it was first performed at the North American Festival of Wales in Milwaukee in 2019, and even managed to complete a Welsh National tour a few days before the first national lockdown.

On returning to the stage, Owen said: “As theatre comes back to life and audiences start to return, it is great that ‘West’ will be performed at Theatr Brycheiniog.

“My last play, ‘Carwyn’ was performed there back in March, and it is always a pleasure to come back to the theatre where my career in the theatre began.”

“tickets are limited, so if you want to come along then please book. It would be great to see you, and the ideal preparation before the show, like the characters, makes its own journey across the Atlantic,” he added.

WEST comes to Theatr Brycheiniog on Wednesday, May 25 2022.
