EUROPE’S top agricultural official and a UKIP MEP are to go head-to-head over Britain’s future in Europe at a debate in Brecon.

Phil Hogan, the EU agricultural commissioner, will appear at a public meeting aimed at the farming community with Stuart Agnew, who is a UKIP Member of the European Parliament. Mr Agnew sits on the Parliament’s agricultural and rural affairs committee.

As well as June’s in/out referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU the two men will discuss and debate the EU’s Common Agricultural Police (CAP) and Welsh farming at the debate Bishop’s Meadow.

The debate is being supported by farming unions NFU Cymru and the FUW and the CLA.

A spokeswoman for the organisers said: "Given the huge importance of Europe as a market for our produce, and the Common Agricultural Policy as a major support structure for our iconic food and farming industries, the debate on the issue of EU membership is of great significance to every farmer within Wales.

"The CAP and its impact on Welsh farming is hugely topical at present and the chance to hear what will undoubtedly be very different views from these two hugely influential figures will be absolutely fascinating. I would urge all farmers and those with an interest in agriculture to attend the debate and have their say on the issue."

The debate takes place at Bishop’s Meadow, Hay Road, Brecon from 7.30pm on Tuesday, May 10 and will be chaired by John Davies, chairman of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.
