TRALLONG Eisteddfod was held on November 4 in Sennybridge Primary School.

The day commenced with classes for local children at 1.30pm on Saturday and the last competitor in the Cenwch i’m yr hen ganiadur competition left the stage just before midnight. The committee believe this year’s eisteddfod to be one of the best for several years, particularly the afternoon session when there were two cyd-adrodd parties on stage. These had been trained by Mrs. Gwyneth Williams, who had also helped the children with their individual solos and recitations.

There were good numbers of excellent competitors in almost all of the competitions. The highlight of the evening was the Champion Solo competition which attracted five excellent soloists - any one of whom was good enough to win the competition. We were very pleased to welcome both the Aberhonddu Male Voice Choir and Sennybridge YFC Hymn Tune party - thanks must go to the musical directors, accompanist and members of both.

The adjudicators, who gave helpful advice and constructive criticism to every competitor were Mr. D. Huw Rees of Pontardawe who adjudicated the musical items; Mrs. Elen Williams of Cwmann who adjudicated the recitation and senior literary items and Mrs Bethan Price of Defynnog for the junior art and literature.

The talented accompanists for the day were Miss Bethan Rees of Llandrindod Wells for the children’s competitions, and Miss Sian Davies of North Cornelly who accompanied the adult competitors in the evening.

Conductors Mrs. Mary Hodges of Cardiff, Mrs Annette Thomas of Brecon, Mrs. Bethan Price of Defynnog and Mr Hywel Phillips of Sennybridge ensured the smooth running of the event.

The President for the afternoon session was Mrs. Ydwena Jones of Llanhamlach and the evening President was Mr. David Evans of Lower Chapel. Both gave thought provoking addresses and generous donations.

Thanks are also due to Eirlys and Adele for preparing and serving refreshments throughout the day. We are also indebted to Gethin and Julie who acted as door stewards throughout the day. Thanks also go to our loyal competitors, trainers and patrons who support us each year. We also wish to extend our thanks to our wonderful band of helpers who cook Welsh cakes at a number of Food Festivals and the Brecon Jazz weekend. These events allow us to raise the bulk of the money needed to run the eisteddfod.

Without the money raised in this way we would be unable to continue to stage this eisteddfod - so important in maintaining our local culture in this part of Powys.
