Have you ever wanted to explore Brecon Cathedral from the comfort of your own home?

Following the launch of a virtual reality (VR) tour on the cathedral’s website, now you can - including climbing the tower with ease from your computer.

The tour, was created by specialist cameraman Chris Taber, 48, of Pedestal Television in Bwlch.

Chris, from Bwlch, said: "I’ve been a TV cameraman for 30 years and specialised in niche camera systems approximately 15 years ago - it satisfies the inner geek.

"I’ve shot everything from ice clubbing in Switzerland to the cranberry harvest in Massachusetts.

"I’m always on the lookout for new tech and came across an American VR system that was really impressive."

Chris said he chose the 1,000-year-old building to do the VR tour because he wanted to "push the system to its limits" as well as giving people a view of the building the might otherwise not have had.

He said he always try to "metaphorically break" new technology by finding test subjects that will really push the system to the limits.

He said: "Finding test subjects that will really push the system to its limits is very important. As the more prominent building in the town, the cathedral was an obvious choice - especially the tower."

Chris said he has a vision for VR tours which includes to increase the accessibility for visitors.

He said he has developed a package which allows visitors with restricted mobility to tour the tower virtually while their family or friends tour for real and they can communicate via headsets which will allow them to listen to the tour guides together as well.

The Dean of Brecon Cathedral Rev Dr Paul Shackerley said: "I receive quite a few cold callers asking the cathedral to work in partnership with other companies but there was something very different and unique when Chris contact me and asked if I would be interested in him filming the cathedral for the 360-degree VR.

"This is something I have wanted to embed in the new cathedral website for two years."

Filming for the VR tour took a few days at the heritage site which welcomes over 120,000 tourists every year.

Rev Shackerley said: "I have been the Dean of Brecon since 2014, and I have never been into the bell chamber, the tower, or on the roof of the tower.

"I suffer with a fear of heights and claustrophobia, so imagine my amazement when I could switch on the VR tour and climb the tour without fear – from the ground."

The VR tour is available on the Brecon Cathedral website.
