The Welsh Pony & Cob Society has celebrated its 125th anniversary at the Royal Welsh Showground.

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society welcomed members of the society to the showground recently as breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts gathered to mark the milestone.

Founded in 1901, the Welsh Pony & Cob Society (WPCS) is the original breed society for Welsh ponies and cobs.

It is now the largest native breed society in Britain, with members and affiliated organisations across the world.

As a registered charity, the society has spent the past 125 years working to preserve, promote and improve Welsh pony and cob breeds.

The anniversary event celebrated the society’s history and the continued success of the Welsh breeds.

Royal Welsh Agricultural Society chief executive Aled Rhys Jones said the organisation had a “longstanding relationship” with the WPCS.

He said: “We were proud to host its 125th anniversary celebrations here at the showground.

“The Welsh breeds are an important part of our agricultural and equestrian heritage, and the WPCS has played a vital role in preserving and promoting them over the past 125 years.

“We look forward to continuing to support the Society and its members in the years ahead.”

Meanwhile, preparations are already under way for the Royal Welsh Winter Fair, which returns to the showground on November 30 and December 1.

Judges for the equine section have now been confirmed, with the full list available on the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society website.

The Winter Fair is one of Europe’s leading prime stock events and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

It features livestock competitions and displays alongside festive attractions and Christmas shopping.

Tickets for this year’s event are due to go on sale in September.
