Pontfaen Young Farmers’ Club (YFC) members enjoyed a highly successful week at this year’s Royal Welsh Show, taking part in a wide range of competitions and helping Brecknock YFC secure third place overall for the week.

The week began on Monday, 20 July, with the club’s ‘Let Me Entertain’ team of Rachel Rees, Alice Hyde, Darcy Boulton, Elin Woods, Amelia Davies and Beth Thompson performing ‘It’s Magic’. Their hard work and creativity paid off as they won the HTV Trophy.

Also on Monday, Sian Healey, Megan Chowdhury and Henry Davies gained eighth place in the scrapbook competition. Members also took part in the 90 Years of Wales YFC celebration in the Main Ring during the afternoon, with Sian Healey coordinating Brecknock’s contribution.

On Tuesday, 21 July, Pontfaen’s Dancing Team of Mollie Hughes, Celyn Owens, Cari Bufon, Ruth Thompson, Ruby White and Maddie Witcomb took to the stage, gaining 13th place out of 22 teams.

There was also sporting success, with William Prosser, Gareth Price and Joel Price representing the county rugby team. The team had a convincing win over Glamorgan, earning their place in the final against Carmarthenshire.

Wednesday brought further achievements for the club’s younger members, as William Herdman, Ruby Herdman and Oliver Norbury competed in the county junior tug of war team alongside Trecastle, winning the junior section. Sophie Lewis also joined the Trecastle team in the ladies’ tug of war and helped them gain second place.

The rugby final between Brecknock and Carmarthenshire proved to be a tough match, with Carmarthenshire taking the win. Pontfaen YFC members would like to thank WW Bowen Ltd for sponsoring the new rugby kit for the Feature County Year.

Pontfaen YFC also entered two teams in the open junior tug of war, producing some excellent pulls throughout the competition. One team finished in fourth place out of nine.

“Thanks are extended to Ceri Davies for training the members and to everyone who helped on the day. The club is also grateful to fellow members who stepped in to ensure a full second team following an injury,” said a spokesperson for Pontfaen YFC.

Thursday (23.July) brought another highlight as Sian Healey, Mollie Hughes and Amelia Davies took part in the fashion competition. They designed and made two outfits themed around the decades, modelled them on stage, and Sian also acted as compere. The team went on to win the Wales Girls’ Sub-Committee Shield.

Megan Chowdhuri, Chair of Pontfaen YFC said the club was extremely proud of every member who competed, supported, helped or represented the club during the week. She said: “The Royal Welsh is always a special event for YFC members, and this year was no exception. Our members showed talent, teamwork, commitment and enthusiasm across every competition. We are delighted with the results and very grateful to everyone who supported the club throughout the week.”

The club’s success contributed to Brecknock YFC finishing third overall for the week, rounding off a memorable Royal Welsh Show for Pontfaen YFC.
