A FATHER was killed when a baby’s safety gate gave way at the top of stairs.
Fitness fanatic Jason Morgan, 43, ’yanked’ on the metal gate which was not fitted properly.
An inquest heard it came loose sending father-of-two Jason toppling down the steep flight of stairs.
A seven-year-old boy found him in a pool of blood with the gate on top of him.
Fitness fanatic Jason suffered ’catastrophic’ head injuries and died a week later when his life support system was turned off.
The amateur boxer and weightlifter had been out celebrating his birthday with pals on the night of the tragedy in January.
He returned to his sister’s home where he was sleeping on the sofa after his 10-year marriage ended.
Jason went to the bathroom but the stairs were blocked by the white gate installed to prevent his nephews tumbling from the top step.
The inquest heard there was a crashing sound as ’gentle giant’ Jason fell backwards into the hallway below.
His sister Theresa Peters told the hearing: "Jason had yanked the baby gate which had become loose.
"We heard a noise and found him at the bottom of the stairs with the gate laying on his chest. He was making snoring noises and there was blood coming from his head."
The inquest heard that ironically the house in Ystradgynlais, Powys, had a downstairs toilet but Jason used the upstairs one due to ’force of habit’.
The seven-year-old who had followed Jason upstairs was interviewed by specially trained police officers about the tragedy.
It took three people to carry 20 stone Jason into an ambulance on an inflatable stretcher.
He was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales where surgeons operated to relieve pressure on his brain.
But Jason, of Ystradgynlais, died in intensive care on January 22. The cause of death was a traumatic brain injury.
South Wales Central coroner Andrew Barclay recorded an accidental verdict.
He said: "Jason tried to negotiate the gate when he was going upstairs.
"The gate has become dislodged and he lost his footing and tumbled down the stairs. He was in a house that was relatively unfamiliar to him and the gate was not secured properly."
Window cleaner Jason’s family gave the go-ahead for his organs to be used for transplantation.
His family said they had taken ’great comfort’ that four people had been given ’a fighting chance’ after his kidneys, liver and pancreas were donated.
Brother Darren, 40, said after the hearing: "Jason was a gentle giant who spent his life helping people. His family and friends are missing him badly."
