Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority is set to mark 20 years since Fforest Fawr’s designation as a Geopark.

To celebrate this milestone, a special festival will take place over two weekends: 27–28 September 2025 at the Visitor Centre, Brecon, and 11–12 October 2025 at Craig-y-Nos Country Park.

Established in 2005 and recognised by UNESCO in 2015, Fforest Fawr covers 763 km² of dramatic uplands, woodlands, rivers and historic landscapes. It has become a living classroom and a hub of heritage, geology, biodiversity and sustainable tourism, and has consistently achieved UNESCO’s “green card” for excellence.

The two weekends will bring the Geopark to life through walks and talks:

• Talks and Lectures: Discover the Evolution of Flowering Plants with expert botanists, and hear the story of the Bannau Brycheiniog Tramroads Project tracing our industrial heritage.

• Guided Walks: Explore themed routes including Iron and Ice (geology and glaciation), Karst, Caves, Crags and Kilns (limestone landscapes), and Wealth of Water (rivers, reservoirs and waterfalls).

• Hands-on Learning: Meet local experts and community groups showcasing the Geopark’s cultural and natural heritage.

Each event is designed to deepen understanding of the land beneath our feet and the stories it tells, while encouraging people to explore and enjoy the Geopark responsibly.

Alan Bowring, Geopark Officer, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority, said: “We are incredibly proud to mark two decades since Fforest Fawr was first designated. During this time we have worked closely with communities, partners and visitors to protect our rich geology, heritage and biodiversity. These celebrations are not just about looking back, but about sharing the story of this landscape, and renewing our commitment to its future.”
