PEOPLE can have their say on plans to close the Welsh stream at a rural primary school at a public meeting.

Powys County Council is proposing to close the Welsh language provision at Ysgol Dolafon in Llanwrtyd Wells.

Parents and the wider community can attend a public meeting in the Bromsgrove Hall, Ysgol Dolafon on Wednesday, February 3 at 6.30pm.

The meeting is open to all but the council is asking that people wishing to attend let it know in advance on 01597 826954 or by emailing [email protected].

The formal consultation, which opened on January 8 and runs until Friday February 19, follows a decision by the independent council’s cabinet last month to consult on the closure of the Welsh-stream at the primary school.

"Pupil numbers in the Welsh-stream at Ysgol Dolafon have fallen to just nine in recent years and they are not expected to increase significantly in the coming years. The cabinet has approved the start of consultation on its closure from August 31, 2016,” said cabinet member for education, Councillor Arwel Jones.

Residents can also respond to the consultation via www.powys.gov.uk/haveyoursay or in writing to the council’s School Modernisation team, County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, LD1 5LG or email [email protected]
