Rhayader residents have once again returned to phone and computer screens across the UK with another locally produced budget advert.

Hafod Hardware on East Street caused the town to go viral online at Christmas with their advert which took on the shopping giants like John Lewis.

On the back of their Christmas success, residents from the town have now created their own comical take on the Wales by the Sea campaign by Visit Wales.

The shop gained fans as their Christmas advert, which stacked up over 500,000 online views, was featured on national news across the county with their £7 budget vs the whopping £7million John Lewis Christmas advert budget which was compared to David and Goliath by viewers.

Tom Jones, 28, who works at the shop which is owned by his grandparents Alan and Pauline Lewis, made the two and a half minute long promotional summer video with his friend Josh Holdaway, a film-maker from London, who also helped to film and edit the Christmas advert.

Rather than a shop advert, this time the video was a collaboration project between the two men and the voluntary group Rhayader 2000 with the use of a £500 grant from Rhayader Town Council.

Rhayader 2000, which was set up nearly 18 years ago to promote the town, invited the two film makers to help with the video in the new year.

The £500 budget was split mainly between hiring the donkey rides and on flying Josh from Austria, where he has lived since around Christmas.

The new tongue-in-cheek promotional video, which was the town’s answer to the Visit Wales theme which isolated most of Mid Wales, shows a grumpy angler who comes across some unusual characters while fishing on the river Wye.

The angler is played by Ric Johnson who viewers may recognise from his debut in the Christmas advert wearing a towel to answer the door.

The kayaker is played by Rhayader resident Steve Moore and the surfer is played by local postman Sean Pugh.

Town Councillor Paul Dark even got involved as he donned his swimming shorts with a drink in hand, paying homage to the Southern Comfort 2012 advert, as he looked like he was walking to the beach through the river Wye.

The angler eventually follows the others to enjoy the Rhayader By The Sea event which was held on the banks of the river Wye last month and included donkey rides, ice cream, a bouncy castle, beach games, picnics and a sand pit.

Talking about the film shoot, Tom said: "It all went well, and we had the perfect weather for it - about 300 people turned up.

"We had people swimming in the river, we had people down the Gro park and on boats on the river.

"We wanted the people to act like we weren’t there filming so that it could look as natural as possible."

The final product, which so far has just under 40,000 views online, can be seen above as well as being featured on Hafod Hardware’s Facebook page and the Rhayader website.

Tom said: "We are getting tourists to come visit Rhayader because it really is a special place and it would be great if we could attract more visitors."

The home improvement store, which was established in 1895 making it one of the oldest in Rhayader, has also been shortlisted for the Marketing Initiative Award category in the DIY Week Awards 2018 for their Christmas advert.

Tom said that they are "very proud" to have been shortlisted for the Christmas advert which started out as "a piece of fun" and that they were looking forward to getting "dressed up" to attend the aware ceremony in the Park Plaza in London on Friday.

He said: "People loved the narrative of David vs Goliath with our low budget advert rivaling the big hitters and proving money wasn’t everything when it came to business promotion and publicity.

"It was massive shock for a small shop like ours to be involved - I was blown away when my grandmother called me to let me know.

"We’re looking forward to getting dressed up and attending the ceremony as we represent small independent Welsh businesses against the corporate giants."
