BRECON’S Paralympic gold medalist Rob Davies has been greeted with a champion’s homecoming at Brecon Rugby Club.
The 32-year-old was left in a wheelchair after suffering a serious injury while playing at hooker for the club in 2005.
On Friday night, Rob who won the gold medal at wheelchair table tennis at the Rio games, was greeted by family, friends, club members and supporters at a surprise welcome home party.
The gold medalist was greeted with chants of ’Robbie, Robbie’ as he arrived at the party with fiancee Meg Rees.
Club chairman Don Howe told the packed clubhouse: "What Rob’s done is a big thing for Brecon and a big thing for Britain."
Friend Gethin Meredith, who’s known Rob since he joined the club’s youth team as a 17-year-old, said: "Everything Rob has had to deal with, I just can’t say enough about the man and it was a privilege to be asked to be his best man at his wedding next year. We’re so proud of you Rob."
Paralympic champion Rob, who was mobbed by well wishers and fans wanting selfies, simply said: "Just thank you everyone for coming."
