Audiences were totally taken aback, indeed mesmerised last week, by Brecon High School’s astounding production of “Oliver Jr.”

A cleverly designed set with sterling technical and background support from both pupils and staff helped to enrich a performance which many suggested belonged in the West End of London. Each member of the large cast were given an opportunity to give of their best within a challenging repertoire. The condensed version of the original “Oliver” contained the most popular of the well known songs delivered with superb musical accompaniment.

Sam Standing’s ability to sing comfortably whilst humorously prancing around the stage to “pick a pocket or two” as Fagin was remarkable, aptly aided by his chief of thieves the Artful Dodger, Zion Finch. Martha Dunn-Rees as Nancy took the audience’s breath away as she commanded the stage with a number of favourite vocals and shear acting talent.

It was clear to see that Lucy Standing’s portrayal as Oliver melted many hearts as menacing Bill Sykes played by Rhydian Woodland made life a misery for both Nancy and Oliver... but he got his due comeuppance in the end!

In the buzz of audience conversations upon leaving the show comments of “how can a local school produce that!” could be heard at the end of the week long performance.

Congratulations are due to the headteacher, producers, teachers and pupils... be very proud after setting a very high standard for future years to follow.
