The Splash Dragons - made up of Taniya Morris, Karen Davies and Fiona Coombs - presented their fundraising plans for the next two years on Wednesday, 25 February, at the Muse in Brecon, in aid of Velindre Cancer Centre.
The trio from Brecon hosted a fun and informative evening to locals, explaining their fundraising efforts.
In September 2026, they will be swimming in outdoor lidos along the M4 corridor from London to Cardiff, covering a distance of 150 miles between them.
The challenge will not only see them raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre, but will also see them lobby MPs at the Houses of Parliament and MSs in the Senedd to highlight the plight of cancer service funding in Wales.
They will participate in a number of fundraising challenges in preparation for their lido challenge and their New York swim in July 2027, where they will participate in an organised swim around the Statue of Liberty, and a swim across the Hudson River from Manhattan to New Jersey. At the Muse on Wednesday, the three swimmers introduced themselves to an intrigued crowd and explained the story behind their fundraising plans.
The trio spoke of their passion for adventure and willingness to give back, as well as sharing how cancer had impacted them and their families, and the support received by Velindre.
They also highlighted the fantastic work Velindre does and the attention to detail the charity offers to those who need support.
Velindre contribute to funding over 40 active clinical trials, and enhance the lives of cancer patients, carers and families in Wales by funding innovative projects and services that extend beyond NHS provisions, including: team clinical psychologists and councillors providing one-to-one care, wig vouchers and headscarves, multi-faith services, complimentary therapists, the Velindre volunteer programme, and more.
