More then 40 supporters from three Powys 5K Your Way groups met up at the Groe parkrun in Builth Wells on Saturday, February 7 to mark World Cancer Day and promote the benefits of movement for people impacted by cancer.
Ambassadors from Newtown, Brecon and Builth Wells joined forces and set off from the Groe start line running, jogging and walking all or part of the route. Many of those taking part had lived with, were living with or had a family member who’d had a cancer diagnosis.
The 5K Your Way groups are part of the Move Against Cancer charity that encourages people impacted by cancer to come together, build friendships, improve confidence and get the benefits from some gentle physical activity. People are invited to join in with the parkrun movement and come together on the last Saturday of each month.
Sue Ling, Lead Ambassador for Powys said: “Our event on Saturday showcased the three groups that exist in the county and highlighted the benefits that movement can bring to people who are impacted by cancer. We had a great turnout including support from the Improving the Cancer Journey (ICJ) in Powys programme and the Lingen Davies Cancer Support charity which funded the set-up of two of the groups (Newtown and Brecon) and has also delivered cancer champion training.”
All three 5K Your Way groups meet at 8:45am on the last Saturday on the month at their respective park runs. Anyone interested in taking part can find out more at: https://www.moveagainstcancer.org/
Sue added: “There is no pressure to run the whole course. 5K Your Way is about people choosing what works best for them. We have people who walk a lap, people who run the whole thing and some who cheer from the sidelines or sit on the bench so they can chat to anyone wanting a conversation or to find out more about the movement . We can signpost to support and also iinvite people to join us for a coffee/breakfast and a social chat after the event. It’s all very friendly and informal and a great use of our community assets working in collaboration with Park Run colleagues and run directors across the county.”
