THE Women’s Institute in Breconshire created a recyclable tree for this year’s Christmas tree festival at Brecon cathedral.
The tree was made using layers of glass jam jars which had all been individually decorated and stacked with the help of wooden boards.
WI member Lynda Probert said: “We’ve been involved with the cathedral’s tree festival several times and we felt that we wanted to do something different this year.
“I was in a board meeting and when I said that, somebody else said about jam jars. So Mary, who is the chairwoman of the committee, got loads of jars and asked members to decorate them however they wanted.
“The ladies took the jars to all four corners of Breconshire and put together different ways of doing Christmas decorations.”
Of the 23 WI groups in the county, it is thought that at least half of them helped with the eco-friendly tree which saw jars with various decorations from knitted to tinsel.
Once the tree has finished being displayed, the members will be able to take the jars home.
Ms Probert said that some of the members would probably give the jars to their grandchildren, especially those who’d received help from the grandchildren to decorate them, and others would use them as festive decorations.
Along with the tree was a sign talking briefly about the tree as well as the WI.
It said: “The Women’s Institute is known for jams and Jerusalem. Our tree has been made using recycled jars.
“It shows what can be achieved with very little by many when we work together.”
