A GROUP of volunteers have celebrated having reached the landmark figure of raising £100,000 towards the fight against cancer.

The Crickhowell Cancer Research Committee has amassed the total since it joined the Cancer Research Wales charity based in Velindre Hospital in Cardiff.

Events organised throughout 2017 took the group towards the total.

Chairman Hazel Thomas said a ball at the Manor Hotel raised £2,600 and she thanked the Hindmarsh family of the Bear Hotel who sponsored the band for the evening.

A golf day at Monmouth Golf Club proved to be a great success with 130 golfers taking part. The day was organised by captain Steven Parry and members of the Crickhowell committee and it raised £5,000.

Dame Shan Legge-Bourke was the guest speaker at an afternoon tea held at the golf club which sold out and and made £1,000. The talk was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

The committee like to promote young artists and soprano Aine Smith was invited to sing at an afternoon tea held at the Dragon Hotel along with harpist Jill Madley.

They entrained with a medley of Welsh and English music. The event was well received by all present and tickets sold out weeks ahead adding another £1,227.45 to the coffers.

An evening with radio personality Owen Money proved to be very popular with people coming from all over Wales and raised £1,657.33.

A very successful raffle took place in the sumer in Crickhowell raising £1,200. Many thanks to all the people who gave so generously.

The magnificent sum of £1,294 was raised by Ian Bayliss, of Gilwern, who had taken part in the Welsh Iron Man triathlon in Tenby.

Donations have also been received from the Llangattock Bridge Club, European Heritage and Crickhowell Bridge Club totalling £1,650.

The committee wish to thank all the people who have sponsored and attended events or donated raffle prizes during this period enabling them to send the large amount of money to Cancer Research Wales in Velindre Hospital.

The committee are currently arranging a gala opera evening in Crickhowell as well as a number of other shows.
