School children gathered in Brecon to sing happy birthday to a woman who celebrated her 100th birthdy last week.

Joyce Williams, who lives with her husband 103-year-old Les at Bell Vue, hit the incredible milestone birthday on Thursday, June 30.

Town crier Marie Matthews loudly announced Joyce’s 100th birthday at her home, while Brecon’s mayor David Meredith and Powys County Council’s newly appointed chairman Gareth Ratcliffe brought her cards and gifts on behalf of both Brecon town and the county.

Joyce was serenaded by pupils from Mount Street Infants and Junior School who regaled her with a beautiful chorus of Happy Birthday in both English and Welsh.

The celebrations, organised by Brecon Town Council and co-ordinated by Joyce’s neighbour Cllr Liz Rijnenberg, started in the afteroon in glorious sunshine with the new centenarian’s family, friends and neighbours joining the event.

Varoius people visited the during the day to pass on their good wishes to Joyce.

Children from Mount Street Infants and Junior School

Brecon Story was on hand to film the event for posterity and add Joyce’s life and achievements to their catalogue of personal stories of Brecon people.

The children from the two schools were particularly impressed when Joyce showed them the personally signed card from Queen Elizabeth.
