A BIRD with an unusual nesting place in Brecon will feature on a BBC nature documentary this week.
The collared dove has made its home on the traffic lights at the junction of Market Street and The Struet in the middle of the town centre.
It features in this week’s episode of Iolo’s Street Life in which naturalist Iolo Williams takes a look at some creative animals as they find new ways of adapting to urban environments.
Animals will use anything to set up their homes in towns from drainpipes to road signs as Built Wells born Iolo discovers in Brecon where the dove settled on top of some traffic lights has surprised locals. Although unusual, it turns out to be the ideal hideaway from predators and a great vantage point.
Also in the programme Iolo follows curious foxes and badgers as they venture into gardens in the search for food. At a home in Conwy, Iolo helps out in providing a late night feast for the visiting family of badgers.
He also visits Deri to find some hedgehogs. Hedgehogs have become increasingly rare but in one particular garden they turn up every night for dinner like clockwork.
From Cardiff to Conwy, Iolo sets out to meet those who have welcomed animals into their towns and neighbourhoods and show us why we should pay more attention to the incredible array of life on our doorstep.
Iolo’s Street Life will be shown on BBC One Wales at 7.30pm on Friday, September 27
