Specsavers in Brecon has introduced a new clinical service aimed at helping people suffering from dry eye symptoms.

The store can now provide ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Technology), a treatment carried out in-store by a trained clinician to help improve comfort for people affected by the condition.

The procedure takes around 10 to 20 minutes and uses a natural okra-based gel and a specialist swab to clean the eyelids and lashes.

By removing build-up, debris and mites that can block the oil glands around the eyes, the treatment aims to provide relief from symptoms such as irritation, redness, watery eyes and blurred vision.

Dry eye is becoming increasingly common, with factors including increased screen use, heating, air conditioning and ageing all contributing to the condition.

Rachel Stephens, director at Specsavers Brecon, said many people believed dry eyes were something they simply had to put up with.

“Untreated dry eye can significantly impact quality of life, comfort and even vision,” she said.

“Seeing an optometrist or contact lens optician is important because they can assess the health of the eye and eyelids, identify the root cause of the dry eyes problem and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.”

She said some symptoms of dry eye could overlap with other eye conditions, making professional advice important.

“Many customers say that after procedures like ZEST, it feels similar to the difference you notice when you clean your glasses – everything becomes clearer, more comfortable, and easier to focus on,” she added.

Patients will receive an assessment before the procedure to determine whether the treatment is suitable for them.

Ms Stephens said while many people notice an improvement after one session, dry eye is often a long-term condition which may require ongoing management and home care.
