The number of Covid-19 cases in Powys have seen a sharp increase since Christmas according to the latest figure from Public Health Wales.

Public Health Wales reported that 550 people tested positive for Covid-19 in Powys yesterday - Wednesday, December 29.

This is more than three times the number of cases on Monday, December 27, which saw 150 people test positive .

This means that Powys Teaching Health Board currently has 415.3 Coronavirus cases per 100,000 members of the population.

The latest figure also means that the total number of cases in the health board’s area now stands at 18,234.

Of the latest figures, PHW also showed that 1,162 tests were completed meaning that 47.3 per cent of those who undertook a test received a positive result yesterday.

The number of Coronavirus cases rose all over the UK including in Wales - 21,051 new cases were reported in Wales compared to 5,929 on Monday. The total number of cases across Wales now stands at 621,732.

There were 183,037 people who tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK on the same day - which brings the total number of cases up to 12,559,926 in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Covid-19 cases are identified by taking specimens from people and testing them for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If the test is positive - except for rapid lateral flow tests which have negative confirmatory lab-based PCR tests taken within 72 hours - this is referred to as a case.

If a person has more than one positive test, they are only counted as one case for all nations with the exception of Wales.
