LEGENDARY climbers Doug Scott CBE and Paul Braithwaite will be giving a talk about their mountaineering adventures this Sunday (November 11) at Theatr Brycheiniog.
‘The Hard Road to Everest’, will take audiences on a trip through their colourful careers, which included being a part of Chris Bonnington’s historic expedition in 1975. Doug Scott, along with Doug Haston, were the first men to climb Everest via its massive south-west face and were also the first Britons to stand on the summit.
This record-breaking expedition is also memorable as the pair survived the highest bivouac ever without bottled oxygen or sleeping bags, resulting in them catching frostbite!
Doug went on to become one of Britain’s greatest ever mountaineers, pioneering new climbs in the remotest corners of the globe. His career spans the golden age of British climbing from the 1960s through to the 1980s.
Paul Braithwaite, alongside Nick Estcourt, helped pave the way to the summit for those who followed. Using brilliant rock climbing skills, they found a route through the almost vertical Rock Band in the ‘death zone’ at 8,200m, and set up fixed ropes.
Alongside this talk there will be a sale of Nepalese cards, goods and posters in support of the charity Community Action Nepal.
There will also be an auction of signed mountaineering prints, again to support the charity’s post-earthquake reconstruction work.
Tickets, priced £15/£13 for the talk which begins at 7.30pm, are available now from the theatre’s Box Office on 01874 611622 or online at Brycheiniog.co.uk.
