WELSH Liberal Democrat leader Kirsty Williams has attacked plans that could see her party colleagues boosting their council allowances.

Kirsty Williams, who is battling to win re-election as the Welsh Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, hit out at proposals that would increase the pay of her local party's top councillors by almost £4,000 each.

The Powys Administration is set to take over executive control of Powys County Council when a cabinet of Powys Independent Alliance councillors and their Lib Dem junior partners replaces the existing power sharing board.

But the Administration has proposed the £48,874 saving from shrinking the executive from 15 members to 10 be shared out amongst the new cabinet. It says cabinet members are taking on increased responsibility and their allowance, which will jump from £9,774 to £13,675, should reflect this.

Ms Williams has said any increase should be delayed until after the local government elections in 2012.

All 73 county councillors receive a £11,925 basic allowance, which the Administration has suggested should be frozen for a year.
