Brecon and Randorshire’s Labour candidate said he is “devastated” by the exit poll for this general election.
The exit poll, which was announced earlier tonight, has predicted a landslide victory for the Conservative party in the UK.
Tom Davies also said he is not hopeful for Labour following the announcement that there had been a Conservative victory at Blyth Valley.
He said: “I’m pretty devastated truth be told. Obviously you’ve got to wait to see the full results come in and the official results come in for each constituency but these exit polls are a pretty solid indicator of the shape that parliament is going to take.
“I think Labour have already lost this election with the third announcement in Blyth Valley. It is devastating.”
Mr Davies, who arrived at the count in Llanelwedd with his girlfriend and his parents, described the campaign trail as intense in the lead up to today’s election.
Mr Davies, who is also a Brecon Town Councillor, said the reaction from voters has been positive on the doorsteps but that Brexit has been a key point mentioned by many.
He also described it as a “strange campaign” which had seen voters changing from their usual parties.
He said: “I think people like what they hear, that’s certainly been a feature. We can’t escape from the B word, Brexit, that’s obviously come up but it’s been a very, very strange election. I say that because obviously I meet a large number of voters.
“I know I’ve had people voting for me in this election who are obviously Labour voters, Liberal Democrats, Greens, I’ve even had Conservatives voting for me, and yet on the flip side of that coin I’ve heard Labour voters voting for the Conservatives for the first time as a lot will have done, certainly in the north of England as well, and while I think we did a very, very good job of changing the narrative in this election, it wasn’t just about Brexit, what has resonated with voters is Boris Johnson’s line and constant persistent line throughout this campaign that it is just about Brexit, that is obviously something that has cut through.
Mr Davies also said he worries that a lot of people who are pro-Brexit have forgotten that another Conservative Government would be for five years.
He said: “What I think is fair to say that for a large number of Brexit supporters, Brexit has become a cult and what people are blind to or what people are seemingly blind to at the moment is the devastation that the Conservative Government has caused over the last nine and a half years.
“ I think that the majority of Brexit supporters, and I’m by no means tarring them all with the same brush, have become blinded by Brexit and unable to either see the opposing point of view, un-opposing point of view or any other aspect of society that we live in and the problem that we have now is that it’s looking like we have a hard right Conservative Government coming in.
“I think that a lot of Brexit voters have been so fixated with Brexit that they forget that the Conservative Government is for the next five years, it’s not just for Christmas.”
